LSJ - Book Recommendations

Need something to read?

Hi Everyone,

Happy Friday! Thanks for spending part of it reading The Lake Street Journal.

I didn’t find much that piqued my interest this week, so I won’t waste your time pretending that I did. This is a shorter issue, but hopefully you still find a nugget you enjoy.

If you like reading about presidents, this is the video for you. Ryan Holiday devours biographies, and he shares a ton of his favorites in this short video.

I've read a bunch of these—Truman, Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, part of the LBJ series, River of Doubt, Plain Speaking—and they're all great.

You could literally spend years reading everything from this nine minute video. So if you're looking for your next book, this is a great place to start.

On the other hand, if you're looking for something a little lighter, I've been enjoying Cry Havoc this week.

It's the latest (I think?) from Jack Carr. It's hard to keep up with how many books this guys publishes. But it goes back in time to the Vietnam War and tells the story of Tom Reece, the father of James Reece, Navy SEAL and main character in Carr's first seven books.

It's not a profound novel, but it's a page turning thriller that's been keeping me hooked and helping me turn off my mind before bed.

If you're looking for pure entertainment, this is a good book to grab.

Workout of the Week

If you're looking for a cardio blast and have access to a ski erg, bike erg, or rower, this is a great workout.

C2 Intervals

500m on / 1 minute rest for AMRAP

Pick a time limit for the 500m of work. This week I was doing the ski erg, so I set my time limit at 2:05. Then repeat as many rounds as possible until you can't make your time limit. I only hit five rounds this week.

Quote of the Week

“If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.” - Abraham Lincoln
