LSJ - Weekend Reading

A book, a video, an article, and a workout.

Hi Everyone,

Happy Friday! Thanks for spending part of it reading The Lake Street Journal.

When I'm busy at work, I like to read fiction in the evening. It takes my mind to a different world and helps me fall asleep.

I wanted to share the latest book I can't put down.

The Fourth Option is another one from Jack Carr, but it's his first with a totally new cast of characters. It has a familiar dose of vigilante justice, plenty of violence, and a gripping story line that keeps me reading with my headlamp while my wife is sleeping.

It already has over 2,000 reviews and a 4.6 rating on Goodreads, which is pretty impressive.

If you're a Jack Carr fan, you'll love this one. If you haven't read any Jack Carr but like thrillers, you should give this one a shot.

I've been ramping up my running over the last month. I started the year with some ambitious running goals that won't play out this year. I'm still going to make the most of the miles I can put in and try to run a PR half marathon in October.

Any time I need some running inspiration, I watch a video from Yowana's YouTube channel. If you're a runner, you need to check this guy out.

His content is super basic. He does shoe reviews and basically stands at the end of his driveway talking into the camera. The production value is low, but the authenticity is high, and that's why I love it.

In this particular video, he shared some workouts he used to significantly improve his marathon time from 3:19 to 2:39. It's a good video, and I'll be doing my own versions of the workouts, but I'm more sharing the channel than any particular video. If you like to run and want to learn more about running from a seemingly normal, down to earth guy, I think you'll like Yowana's content.

It's amazing what you can learn when you're willing to talk to strangers and connect the dots.

When I lived in Queens, I had a landlord named Robinson. He lived in the basement of the building, so I saw him often. In most of our conversations, he did the majority of the talking. And he was almost always talking about harmony.

Years later, I traveled to Hong Kong for work and had an interesting conversation with Steve, the man who drove me from the airport to the hotel. He told me about his careers, past and present, and without saying it directly, he shared the importance of a balanced life.

Connecting the dots of those conversations years later, the value of balance and harmony settled into my soul. Both interactions were brief, but they were heavy with wisdom.
