LSJ - Weekend Reads

A few things to chew on over the weekend.

Hi Everyone,

Happy Friday! Thanks for spending part of it reading The Lake Street Journal.

I'm at the beach with my family this week, so I took a break from doing any original writing. Here are a few things I read this week that I think you'll find interesting. Let's get into it.

I enjoyed this article about cultivating feel—essentially achieving mastery in any subject.

The author talks about how thousands of hours of deliberate basketball practice in his teens allowed him to shoot 88% from the free throw line after not touching a ball for ten years.

Then he explained how he uses the same concepts in shorter sprints to master skills in his business, such as crafting and presenting the perfect fundraising pitch.

It's an interesting read for anyone who's serious about improving at anything. Thanks to Peter Kang for sharing this in his newsletter.

I was horrified to hear about the murder of Charlie Kirk. Like him or not, this evil act deeply violated our American ideals.

My friend Tom White wrote an excellent essay on the murder and what it means for our country. Give it a read and let me (or Tom) know what you think.

After watching the McChrystal podcast I recommended last week, I picked up a copy of his newest book, On Character. I've been chipping away at it this week and enjoying it quite a bit.

I'd describe the book as a modern-day Meditations, each chapter a short essay on how to live a better life with greater character. If you're into practical philosophy, I think you'll enjoy this book.

Workout of the Week

I love workouts that have this type of rep scheme. Always a fun challenge.

"Assault Bells"

10-20-30-40-50

  • Calories on assault bike

  • Russian kettlebell swings (53 lbs)

Prepare to feel the burn on this one. Good luck!

Quote of the Week

"What gets us into trouble is not what we don't know. It's what we know for sure that just ain't so." - Mark Twain
