LSJ - Weekend Reads

One article, two videos, one song.

Hi Everyone,

Happy Friday! Thanks for spending part of it reading The Lake Street Journal.

Here's another George Mack article that is sooooo good.

Close your eyes and think back to your childhood. Think back to the last day of school before summer vacation. You felt like you had the whole world ahead of you. Dozens of sleepovers. Hundreds of adventures. Thousands of hours climbing trees, riding bikes, and swimming with friends.

Now open your eyes and think about this summer. If you're like me, you spent most of it working, a small chunk on vacation, and the rest trying to keep your kids from killing each other. It passed in the blink of an eye.

As we get older, our perception of time generally speeds up. That's what this article is all about. Why we feel that way and how we can slow it down.

This line from the article really hit me: "When you’re 5 years old, a year is 20% of your life. And when you’re 50 years old, a year is 2% of your life. Janet’s law states that you experienced roughly half of your perceived life by 20 years old. Or to put it another way: The summer for a 5 year old feels as long as the 10 years from 40 to 50 years old."

Man, let that sink in.

So what's the solution? How do you get to the end of your life and not feel like it flew by? You remember more of it.

Mack offers a few suggestions.

Seek novelty - break from your routine as much as possible because you remember the things that are out of the ordinary.

Optimize for the better story - when you face a fork in the road, follow the path that will lead to the better story. Similar to novelty, stories stick with us. Write some good ones, and you won't forget them.

Marvel at the small details - even in the ordinary moments, you can find novelty. No two sunsets look the same. Take note of the funny things your kids say at breakfast. Notice the smell of the leaves or the flowers or the chimney smoke on your walks through the neighborhood. Make life more memorable simply by noticing it.

This article feels much like Tim Urban's The Tail End in that I'll bookmark it and read it once, or twice, or three times every year. Hope you enjoy it too.

This is a video about a group of guys hiking 80 miles through the Wind River Range over three days. I didn't know anything about this mountain range before watching the video, but it looks like an incredible hike.

The scenery in the video is gorgeous. The hike looks challenging, but if you spread it over more than three days it seems very manageable. Despite some climbing, large portions of the hike appear flat with incredible views. I told my wife I would like to do this trip with our kids when they are teenagers.

If you enjoy backpacking or just some beautiful mountain views, I think you'll enjoy this video.

Here's another video. My reading has been limited lately due to the workload at my day job, but I spend a lot of the day listening to videos in the background.

I discovered this guy Eric Floberg recently and have been enjoying some of his running content.

If you're a runner and you spend any time online, you might be a sucker for training tip videos. I know I am. Well this guy took his marathon time from just under 4 hours to somewhere in the 2:30s, so he's got some worthwhile knowledge to share.

This video covers tips on distance, intensity, nutrition and hydration, strength and mobility, and community. If you're striving for a faster time at any distance, I'm sure you'll take something valuable from this one.

Song of the Week

I know I shared a whole playlist from Charles Wesley Godwin a few weeks ago, but this is one of his I keep playing over and over. This particular video is probably my favorite version.

Quote of the Week

“You must not think a man has lived long because he has white hair and wrinkles: he has not lived long, just existed long.” - Seneca
